Astaxanthin

Natural astaxanthin

Packet question: exact oral astaxanthin preparations, skin, recovery, performance, eye and metabolic outcomesEvidence level C

Level C describes limited, mixed or context-dependent human evidence for this exact question; read the conclusion for direction and limits.

This C grade applies only to the source-, formulation-, dose- and outcome-specific question in the controlling packet. It does not transfer across preparations or to a finished product.
REVIEWED EVIDENCE PACKETQuestion-specific review complete for this published scope.

The grade is controlled by the stated packet question and outcome map.

Why people are interested

Astaxanthin is a red carotenoid often sourced from algae. Small human trials show a few instrument-measured skin and exercise-marker signals, while visible rejuvenation, faster recovery and longevity remain unproven.

Outcome map

One ingredient. Different questions.

Evidence can be stronger for a specific marker or population and weaker for a broader promise. Each row answers a separate question.

  1. 01

    Skin moisture and elasticity

Small, short and often commercially connected trials show instrument-measured signals, but their visible and clinical importance is uncertain.

    Evidence level C
  2. 02

    Post-exercise creatine kinase

A modest pooled reduction appears for this laboratory marker only; it does not establish faster functional recovery.

    Evidence level B
  3. 03

    Wrinkles and oral sun protection

Current evidence does not establish fewer wrinkles or a sunscreen-like protective effect from oral astaxanthin.

    Evidence level E
  4. 04

    Recovery and performance

Direct performance outcomes are null or inconsistent, and laboratory-marker changes do not prove better recovery or performance.

    Evidence level E
  5. 05

    Healthy aging and lifespan

Human evidence does not establish disease prevention, clinically meaningful healthy aging or longer life.

    Evidence level E

01

How it may work

A carotenoid involved in membrane-associated redox activity; source, formulation and exposure materially affect what can be inferred.

02

What people have studied

Small, short human trials suggest that some oral Haematococcus pluvialis preparations may improve instrument-measured skin moisture and elasticity, and pooled trials show a modest reduction in post-exercise creatine kinase as a laboratory endpoint. They do not establish fewer wrinkles, sun protection, faster functional recovery, better performance, broad eye or metabolic benefit, healthy aging or longer life.

03

What to consider

Source, ester profile, carrier, co-ingredients and dose are not interchangeable. Finished-product identity, stability, interactions and market-specific exposure conditions require separate review.

04

Local pathway

Source, strength and formula classification remain pending. Market-specific conditions differ and require separate product review.
